A Survey for Nursing Research Education and Support for Nursing School Faculty Research

Abstract
A nationwide survey was taken place in order to study present status of nursing research education and faculty research support in Korean nursing education system. Sixteen out of 19(84.2%) baccaleureate program nursing schools and 26 out of 43 (60.5%) diploma program nursing schools responded to mailed questionnaire. Then data from 42 nursing programs were analyzed for the study.
The study results show as below;
1. Nursing research education is increasing in beccaleureate and diploma nursing programs. In diploma nursing programs, 15 programs (71.5%) offered optinal nursing research courses. Most of these courses were opened recently (87% in 1-5 years), and reflects nursing educators¡¯ changing view regarding roles of clinical nurses in nuring research. In baccaleureate program, all 16 schools offered nursing research courses, 71.4% as required, 28.6% as optional, and 79.6% of these courses were open before 1985.
2. At least one nursing research course in required in all of master¡¯s programs.
3. The quality and quantity of support given to faculty members¡¯ research activities was poor in general. Respondents pointed out as difficulty of funding as the biggest problem in research activities. It was suggested that nursing scientists should take effort in order to give wide publicity for excellence and uniqueness of nuring science, especially to other academic societies and research funding organizations.
It is suggested that hours of lecture and clinical instruction, support personnel for faculty research, academic activities(in nation and international) and publication should be included in future study of faculty research activities.
